Paraben Corporation, the industry leader in handheld and mobile forensics, had launched their mobile forensic certification program – PCME. Paraben’s Certified Mobile Examiner is the premier industry certification for mobile forensic examiners. Digital forensic examiners are faced with more and more types of digital evidence. The need for specialized mobile forensic examiners has created a need for certification. The certification requirements are stringent and solid which will make sure that the best examiners are only awarded the certification, thereby helping the forensic community. Thus, PCME is must for you as not only will it test your skills in handling the latest technologies, but it will also help in giving you a strong foothold in the forensic industry.
Paraben has based its training on a slightly different approach than other companies with a comprehensive 360° system that covers not only how to use technology but how the underlying device technology works. Having the company do a certification for mobile forensics was a natural progression. But Paraben has held its commitment to quality training by awarding the best certification out there. Unlike other training programs, Paraben’s PCME doesn’t focus solely on cell phones. This comprehensive approach to certification keeps in line with Paraben’s 360° approach to forensics. By covering cell phones, PDAs, hybrid devices, SIM cards, and even GPS devices and by combining both theory and device knowledge with practical examinations and thorough testing, Paraben’s certified examiners will be prepared for whatever the world of handheld forensics throws at them.
Details about how to become PCME certified can be found at Paraben’s training website at: http://www.paraben-training.com/pcme.html

At a recent Techno-Security conference, over 1500 law enforcement and security professionals were briefed on the latest cyber-security vulnerabilities. Many issues and their solutions were discussed. One such issue was recovering the data from a mobile phone in a short period of time. This is when the CSI Stick from Paraben caught the attention of many because it can grab all data from a cell phone very quickly.
The Cellular Seizure Investigation Stick or CSI Stick captures all the data from a cell phone, even deleted data that has not be overwritten. This device was primarily aimed for Law Enforcement and Security Professionals but now, it can be purchased by anyone. The CSI Stick is about the size of a BIC lighter and its tip is color coded to work with certain model cell phones. By plugging the CSI Stick into the data port of a cell phone, it can quickly download all e-mails, instant messages, dialed numbers, phone books and everything else stored in the memory.
Paraben calls it “The Portable Cell Phone Forensic and Data Gathering Tool” and has priced the CSI Stick at $200. It requires their proprietary Device Seizure or DS Lite software installed on your computer which deciphers the encrypted data and presents it on your computer in a readable format.
We are the authorized distributors for Paraben products. For ordering the CSI stick, contact us at: info [at] agapeinc.in

Recently, Jonathan Zdziarski presented an O’Reilly webcast iPhone Forensics: Bypassing the iPhone passcode which demonstrated steps that can be used by law enforcement to bypass the iPhone 3G’s passcode lock by creating a custom firmware bundle. During the webcast Zdziarski explained how the iPhone keeps a snapshot image of your most recent action. He also stated that it could take as little as 60 seconds to break the iPhone’s security. Some of the other methods include taking data from the iPhone’s keyboard cache, Safari cache, Google Maps lookups and so on. Experts and hackers can also recover deleted photos or e-mails from months ago.”
Zdziarski has been a longtime mobile hacker who has played a key role in opening the iPhone’s environment. He has written books on iPhone development and forensics for O’Reilly. He would be organising a 2 day forensic workshop from tomorrow.
Considering these loopholes in iPhone, no one would like to spend on a device that does not promise robust security. Not that everyone has got anything to hide, but there are some things that everyone wants to remain private - always.

Cell Phone Virus? Is it really possible? Yes, it is. Think of your cell phone in the same terms as you think of your computer. If your cell phone has the Internet on it and can browse the web and open email attachments and sync with your Outlook and on and on, a virus can attack your phone any time. As more consumers are migrating towards using the iphones and PDA’s, which are armed with latest technologies, the security poses a big question.
There was a chaos in 2004 when Cabir (first cell phone virus) infected many phones around the world. Currently, there are three infection vectors used by mobile malware to infect phones. They are: Bluetooth, MMS messages and MultiMediaCard (MMC). So how does one avoid their mobile phones from getting infected?
Here are some suggestions -
- The easiest way to prevent your mobile from getting infected is by rejecting any messages that come from unknown sources.
- The other way (which can be used for infected phones) is using a strong Anti-virus solution. There are many proprietary products such as Avira AntiVir Mobile, F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Mobile Security.
- If all these options fail to protect your mobile, its time to call an expert.
So, beware of the malicious messages and executables that you receive as they are licensed to infect.
